How to Recreate the Appearance of the Fallen Soldiers of the WWII?

‘Reconstructing the Appearance of the Fallen Soldiers of World War II’ is one of the unique projects that allows to imagine the people who defended the country during the Second World War. The Laboratory of Anthropological Reconstruction (LAR) has been working for several years on the scientific reconstruction of the appearance of soldiers whose remains are found by search teams. Scientists have already managed to recreate the appearance of more than 30 unknown soldiers and in some cases to establish the names of the missing.

The authors (Elizaveta Veselovskaya, Yulia Rashkovskaya) performed graphic reconstructions of skulls in profile and full-face, noted special signs and pathologies, if any. In some cases, when it was possible to work with a complete skeleton, the lifetime growth and body type were restored. Some of the reconstructions were posted on the website of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the possibility of reposting them in social networks so that their relatives could recognize them. Thus, several families found new information about their missing relatives.

These comparative examinations are rare in their kind, since it was possible to identify individuals using the method of anthropological reconstruction with subsequent identification examination. The project uses new technologies and the latest developments in the field of anthropological reconstruction (3D scanning, image restoration using computer programs).
