Transition to participatory medicine

From passive recipients of medical services individuals turn into active participants of  treatment process, making consious decisions and sharing responsibility with the doctor. Informed consent to receive health care allows the patient to understand all the risks and to follow consciously medical prescriptions in order to increase overall effectiveness of the therapy. Transition to participatory medicine is the main topic of the new issue of trendletters, produced as part of a joint project of the Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Center and the UNESCO Futures Studies Chair (UNESCO Futures Literacy Chairs network).

For reference: This series of trendletters continues the practice of publishing reviews of global technological trends since 2014 and presents a unique database of global trends and challenges in the field of human development. This research of the HSE ISSEK is based on the results of iFORA Big Data System, the Delphi survey (with the participation of more than 400 leading foreign and Russian scientists), expert sessions and interviews.

Researchers note a growing public interest in the field of medicine, partially caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, that results in a significant increase in the volume of content devoted to medicine, healthcare and principles of healthy lifestyle. The emergence of high-quality information available and adapted for non-professional content consumers facilitates process of understanding this confusing field of scientific knowledge.

Besides patients’ increased attention to their health, researchers focus on the popularity of wearable electronic devices that allow non-invasive real-time monitoring of overall health status and more detailed metrics. It is expected that by 2027, more than 470 million people will be using wearable medical devices.

In order to enhance functionality of these electronic devices more and more applications that help to normalize sleep patterns, to learn to medication or to follow a prescribed diet are presented on the market.
